Abstract

We reviewed retrospectively 412 knees that underwent ACL reconstructions to analyze incidence and patterns of injuries associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears by time of injury, causes of injury and type of sports. Associated lesions according to time of injury, causes of injury and sports types were compared. In the acute group, isolated injuries to the ACL, medial collateral ligament injuries and bone contusions were more common (P<0.05). The chronic group had higher incidence of medial and lateral meniscus tears and chondral defects (P<0.05). The sports injury group sustained more associated injuries than the non-sports injury group, but no statistical significance was found. The most common sport of injury was soccer. In conclusion, the incidence of meniscal injuries and chondral defects increased in chronic ACL injured knees, but causes of injury did not affect the incidence and patterns of associated injuries.
